Filming tips
How should I film my shot for the best trace?
Film from the side so the camera watches the ball travel across the frame, not straight toward you. Keep the whole flight in view, from impact to landing, and hold the phone as steady as you can. Propping it on a bag or a cart works great.
Why does my ball keep flying out of the frame?
You're probably zoomed in too far or standing too close. Back up a little and leave plenty of sky above your target line. A ball that looks small but stays in frame beats one that shoots off the top.
Should I use my phone's zoom?
Try not to. Digital zoom makes the picture softer and shakier, which gives the tracer less to lock onto. Move closer on foot if you can, and let the ball sit near the middle of the frame. If you do zoom, turn on camera calibration for better results.
How the tracer works
What does Albatrace do?
You film a shot, tap the ball at impact and again where it lands, and we draw a broadcast-style tracer over the flight. Most short phone clips are ready in a few seconds.
What's the difference between Auto Trace and Manual Trace?
Auto Trace does the work for you. You tap impact and landing, and we find the flight and draw the line using computer vision and tracking. Note: there are limitations based on lighting conditions and camera quality. Manual Trace hands you the controls for tricky clips and can give you a pixel perfect trace.
Camera calibration
Why is my trace moving across the video?
That's usually the camera moving during the clip, from a zoom, a pan, or a shaky hand. The trace is pinned to the video, so when the video shifts, the line looks like it slides. Turning on camera calibration fixes it. Depending on where you are in the app this is labeled Camera Tracking or calibration, and it works out how the camera moved so we can hold the line steady.
How do I set up calibration?
Turn on camera tracking, then tap a few things in the scene that never move, like a ridge line, a railing, a flag pole, or a tree. Add as many of these points as you can and spread them across the frame. Four or five gives you a strong lock. Then scrub the timeline to check each point stays on its object, and drag any that drift.
Fixing a bad trace
The trace doesn't match my shot. Can I fix it?
Yes. Every trace is editable. Drag the arc handles to reshape the line until it follows the real flight, and the preview updates as you go. If that doesn't work, use Manual Keypoint Trace for a pixel perfect tracer.
The line is close, but the start looks off. What do I do?
Grab the handles near the start of the flight and nudge them onto the ball's real path. The editor gives you extra control over early flight, since that's where small errors stand out the most.
